The Eraserheads get nostalgic with ‘Huling El Bimbo’ concert
The Eraserheads take their fans on a nostalgic overdrive.
The Eraserheads staged a successful reunion concert at the SMDC Festival Grounds last December 22, 2022. The much-awaited concert was packed full of nostalgic moments for fans and music lovers who all had a great time judging by the cheering, clapping, and the inevitable singing along to the hits of the Eheads.
The Huling El Bimbo concert benefitted from logistical issues that cropped up during previous events held at the same venue just days before. More personnel were directing traffic and there were event marshals constantly watching over the crowd upon entry.
The Diegos took on DJ duties before the show and during intermissions with a mix of local rock classics and international pop hits (imagine a Spice Girls song playing at an Eheads concert). The UP Pep Squad also put in appearance, giving a nod to the Ely Buendia, Raimund Marasigan, Marcus Adoro, and Buddy Zabala’s alma mater.
The Eraserheads opened with “Superproxy” with the help of the late Francis Magalona who appeared via hologram, a first in the Philippines. Ely’s son Eon and Francis M’s sons Elmo and Arkin took over performing the song originally done by their fathers.
Guest performer Gary Valenciano proved himself worthy of his Mr. Pure Energy moniker as he sang and played the bongos. Incidentally, his son Paolo Valenciano served as the concert director for the epic event.
In between songs, the band also engaged in banter with the audience, referring to things people of a certain age would understand. The band also poked fun at themselves, even during what seemed to be a minor set list mix up. There were videos that showed old footage of the band from their early days and throughout the years.
The band dedicated “With A Smile” to their fans who have stuck with them through the decades. The crowd loudly sang along, especially to hits like “Alapaap”, “Pare Ko”, “Overdrive”, “Torpedo”, “Maling Akala”, “Magasin”, “Spoliarium”, and “Huwag Mo Nang Itanong”.
The Eheads called on Mel Villena who led the AMP Orchestra in playing “Ligaya” and the finale song “Ang Huling El Bimbo”. The show ended with confetti and a fireworks show, capping off an awesome night of songs and memories.
